6black tea bagsyou can use any brand, but I prefer Lipton or Luzianne
8cupsof water
1 ½cupsgranulated sugarfor that authentic Sonic sweetness
Ice cubesas much as needed
Optional: fresh lemon slicespeach slices, or a few sprigs of mint for garnishing
Instructions
Step 1: Brew The Tea
Start by bringing 8 cups of water to a boil in a large pot or kettle.
Once boiling, remove from heat and add the 6 black tea bags. Cover the pot and let the tea steep for 5-10 minutes. The longer you steep, the stronger the tea will be.
Step 2: Sweeten The Tea
While the tea is still warm, add the sugar. Stir until it’s completely dissolved. This step is key for getting that signature Southern sweet tea flavor Sonic is known for.
Step 3: Chill The Tea
After the sugar dissolves, remove the tea bags and let the tea cool down for a bit at room temperature.
Once it’s cool, transfer the tea to a pitcher and pop it in the fridge to chill completely.
Step 4: Serve Over Ice
When ready to serve, fill your glasses with ice and pour the tea over. For that authentic Sonic experience, use crushed ice if you can (it really makes a difference!).
Garnish with a lemon wedge, a peach slice, or even a sprig of mint if you’re feeling fancy.
